It was upon leaving their respective bands, Butch with LINCOLN and Rob with WIZARD, that the pair teamed up as a duo. They knew each other from the circuit and Rob had occasionally jammed with LINCOLN during their Le Coq d’Or residency. The decision to desert the band format was largely based on economics and the ability to land work. Fewer hotels and clubs were employing bands due to the expense and a trend was evolving where duos and solo artists were being favoured by these establishments. Experience was to confirm that these pared down line-ups were proving to be more lucrative for the musicians.
Playing Top 20 fare, the “Brothers” began their activities in Malvern, Johannesburg, before landing gigs at the Holiday Inn, East London, Park Towers Hotel in Port Elizabeth, the Chelsea Arms in Cape Town’s Wynberg suburb and the Barrels pub at the Helderberg Hotel in Somerset West.
It was at this juncture that Butch Cook decided to “go it alone” and he and Rob parted company in good spirit. Rob then formed TRUCK.
